Haven on the Lake provides a variety of services to keep you stress-free this season

It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but the holiday season can bring a torrent of stress. The sun sets earlier, temperatures plummet and stores are congested with frazzled shoppers. You might need a holiday haven.

Columbia resident Carrie Heath knows firsthand how taxing the holidays can be. A mother of two, Heath works as a team member at Whole Foods, which — like many grocers — experiences a huge upswing in business during the holidays.

“I’ve realized how important it is to practice self-care during this time of year, even if it’s just for a few hours,” she said.

Heath doesn’t have to go far to find a reprieve from the hustle. Haven on the Lake, a wellness retreat nestled within the Downtown Columbia Lakefront, provides the holiday haven Heath is looking for.

“I’m so grateful that I get to take care of myself in such a privileged way,” she said.

Kathy Gates, a figure skating teacher and mother of three, said that Haven provides an escape from her hectic winter schedule.

“When you walk into Haven, you immediately feel less stressed and can just let everything go,” she said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Try a mind body class

Mind body classes include holistic practices like yoga, Pilates and tai chi. Rather than simply focus on the physical, these classes provide a holiday haven by encouraging an overall sense of well-being.

According to the Mayo Clinic, yoga can relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress, and it can also lower blood pressure heart rate.

“I think that yoga is a powerful way to help the body and the brain,” said Heath. “For anyone experiencing anxiety, I would definitely recommend it.”

And if you’re looking for a way to combat calories, Haven also offers a variety of classes that are great for slimming down.

“The barre classes have really helped me tone up and lose weight efficiently,” Gates said.

TRX, Pilates and LaBlast dance classes are also top choices if you’re looking to keep in shape during the colder months.

Aquatic versions of these classes are also available and take place in Haven’s Movement and Relaxation pool.
