While the past year has been incredibly difficult for a number of reasons, our amazing Haven on the Lake community has been a constant source of strength, support and love.
Whether online or in-person, the opportunity to see your faces and heal together has been the highlight of our days here at Haven. The resilience and grace you’ve shown in the midst of these challenging circumstances is nothing short of remarkable, and we’re constantly in awe of each and every one of you.
In short, we’re honored by those who see Haven as a vital part of the Columbia community. That’s why this post is difficult for us to write, however, we owe it to you 100% to be fully transparent. As the Board of Directors drafts its budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, tough decisions must be made in response to the ongoing pandemic, and it’s been proposed that Haven on the Lake close its doors in May 2021.
We want to emphasize that you have the chance for your voice to be heard (more details below), and nothing has been finalized regarding this proposition. Below is a message from CA’s Sports & Fitness Director Dan Burns that shares more on the current state of the budget.
Message From Dan Burns
“Leadership at Columbia Association (CA) recently released its draft budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, which begins May 1, 2021. That plan does not include funding for the continued operation of Haven on the Lake. That proposal is subject to approval by CA’s Board of Directors.
We understand this unique facility means a lot to the members who utilize its programs and amenities. That said, COVID-19 has presented new and unforeseen financial challenges. The cost of running Haven on the Lake is not sustainable nor fiscally responsible for our organization moving forward through those challenges.
Our team will work hard to offer as many comparable services as possible to best serve the needs of members at our other CA facilities. We will continue to offer those memberships on a month-to-month basis while the Board discusses a finalized budget.
This recommendation is subject to the approval of the Board of Directors. If you would like to voice your opinion on this matter, there are a number of ways to do so:
- CA is hosting a Virtual Town Hall via Zoom on Thursday, January 21, starting at 7pm. You can participate by registering with your questions (by January 17) or catch the livestream on YouTube.
- The Board will meet periodically from now through late February to discuss FY 2022 budget issues, and all of them are open to the public. That includes the following work sessions and meetings. You can review meeting agendas and documents on our Board of Directors page and watch the discussions and decisions in real time by subscribing to our CA Live Stream YouTube page.
- Anyone is welcome to participate in Resident Speakout during Board meetings and work sessions.
- You can also contact the Board of Directors using this form.
Regardless of what happens, CA wants to thank everyone who has chosen Haven over the last six years or so. We hope it has provided you with health, peace and joy and appreciate your understanding as we make these difficult decisions.”
We Are Still Here For You
Please know that your messages of support and gratitude throughout this pandemic have bolstered our spirits more than we can ever express, and we are still here for you as a safe space for relaxation and healing.
Again, do not hesitate to voice your opinions to the Board of Directors. We will absolutely keep you updated on every ongoing development.
