Yoga classes at Haven on the Lake improve hip health and overall wellness

Sarah Ringerud’s love of running had begun to take a painful toll. A variety of issues, including hip injuries, caused by the high-impact exercise threatened to derail her fitness routine, which included running 35 miles a week and training for marathons.

But then she turned to yoga.

“I had done yoga off and on, but never really made a commitment to it,” she said. “When I kept having so many issues with my hips, pelvis and feet, I decided to get more into it.”

She took up a weekly practice at Haven on the Lake that included attending a Yoga Basics class. This beginner class is meant to provide a foundation for new and seasoned yogis alike, fusing concepts from different styles of yoga, while also introducing yoga philosophies that promote physical and mental wellbeing. Each class focuses on mindfulness, meditation, the foundation of different postures and proper alignment.

After three months of developing a regular yoga practice, Ringerud noticed a significant improvement in her physical health and can now run without pain. Her story is just one of many that emerged from Haven’s Yoga Basics class on a Wednesday afternoon.

“This class has changed my life,” Sheryl Mirsaidi said of her time practicing yoga at Haven.

After suffering three years of severe pelvic pain from adenomyosis (a condition that causes extreme abdominal pain, pelvic issues and cramping), Mirsaidi underwent a hysterectomy.

“The hysterectomy alleviated about 80 percent of the pain, but I still needed relief,” she said.

Mirsaidi regularly attends yoga classes at Haven. The pain that led her to surgery is now nonexistent. While some experience extreme relief as a result of yoga, the practice can also be a way to relieve everyday issues that can come from office-bound lifestyles, driving and caring for your children.

“After having kids, I decided to get more into yoga,” said Erin Sperco. “The tension in my hips has absolutely melted away.”

Haven offers several yoga classes to appeal to different fitness levels and needs. Other mind body classes include Pilates, aquatic classes, barre and dance, tai chi, QiGong, and TRX.
