It’s no secret that 2020 has done a number on our stress levels. As we all navigate a path through uncharted territory during this time, self-care is more essential than ever, especially when it comes to buffering our immune systems against the deleterious effects of stress.
At Haven on the Lake, we consider relaxation our main forte and remain dedicated to helping you find balance and strength.
“Whether it’s online or in-person, our mind-body classes build community in a time where many of us feel isolated,” says Heather Jefferson, Haven on the Lake Program/Group Fitness Manager. “Haven’s broad menu of offerings can help empower you, no matter how powerless you feel to our current circumstances.”

The Tie Between Stress & Your Well-being
You likely know from personal experience that stress can fray your nerves, triggering you to have an outsized reaction to small disturbances. But beyond wreaking havoc on your mood, stress also has an insidious effect on your immune system in both the short-and long-term.
One reason? When you’re stressed, your body pumps out greater levels of cortisol, and an excess of this stress hormone in your blood over time can lead to inflammation. The science continues to implode on the various devastating effects of inflammation, with cardiovascular disease perhaps being one of the most well known. Another hazard is that stress lowers your lymphocytes, the white blood cells that fight off infection, which means you’re that much more vulnerable to viruses when your levels take a dip.
At Haven, we offer plenty of opportunities (from yoga to Barre to Pilates) to tame those stress levels and help you find balance. Here’s a quick glance:
- Connection. We understand that social distancing and social isolation are not synonymous. Haven has stringent measures in place to create the safest possible environment — from limited capacity classes to increased sanitation protocols — for our community to gather social-distance style and reap the benefits, from lower levels of anxiety and depression to increased longevity.
- Breathwork. When we’re stressed, we have a tendency to breathe shallowly or even hold our breath entirely, which only exacerbates our state of tension. Full, conscious breathing, however, encourages the body to relax, promotes mental clarity and calms the nervous system. That’s why many of our classes have a huge breathwork component — to not only provide immediate relaxation, but also healthy stress management off the mat, too.
- Sweat it out. While we have a fair share of slowed-down, restorative classes, we also offer programs (such as Cardio Barre, Aqua Spin, and TRX) where working up a sweat is pretty much non-negotiable. Sweating is an amazing way to filter toxins out of the body and boost the immune system…and giving your skin a lit-from-within glow doesn’t hurt either!
- Meditation. There’s no shortage of research proving the stress-relieving benefits of mediation. Whether you come for a sound meditation, get a glimpse into meditation in one of our yoga classes or simply love the meditative effects of a good workout, you’re sure to calm the mind and body, which in turns enhances your heart health and strengthens your immune system.
