Robyn Lindsey shows off her fancy footwork at CA facilities and abroad

Robyn Lindsey’s dance moves have afforded her a wealth of opportunities throughout the country and abroad.
An Ohio native, Lindsey pursued a dance degree from Liverpool John Moores University in England. She spent years instructing and competing throughout the world before starting RL Dance Company, which offers classes and private lessons in Maryland and Washington D.C.
RL Dance’s philosophy is one of inclusiveness, where people of all ages and abilities can come together to express themselves through different styles of dance.
“I’m a big believer that dance is something for everyone,” Lindsey said. “It brings joy to people. It’s something that really aligns with the idea of integration, which is what got me into working with people with special needs.”
The Special Olympics
Last March, Lindsey and a team of students attended the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Graz, Austria. Because dance is not yet a sanctioned sport at the Special Olympics, Lindsey and her team financed their trip through fundraising events and donations.
“We wanted to go to the Special Olympics for more than just the experience,” she said. “We wanted to create ambassadors for the special needs community and show that there are several opportunities in the world of dance for all abilities.”
The team’s performance involved a series of LaBlastⓇ routines. Created by Dancing with the Stars pro and Special Olympics ambassador Louis van Amstel, LaBlast is a partner-free, dance fitness program that combines various ballroom dance styles in a fun, accessible way. Lindsey said she initially became certified in LaBlast solely as preparation for the Special Olympics but quickly fell in love with the program.
“LaBlast sort of marries my love of dance and fitness,” Lindsey said.
While getting certified, Lindsey connected with LaBlast Master Trainer and Columbia Association’s assistant director for group fitness, Megan Cooperman. It was from there that Lindsey began to fill in for other LaBlast instructors at CA’s fitness clubs as well as Haven on the Lake, the mind body wellness retreat in Downtown Columbia.
Lindsey also led a series of ballroom dance classes at Haven, which included lessons on swing, cha-cha, tango and more.
