There’s no shortage of benefits that come from taking your workout into the water, but perhaps the greatest is that it offers a release from gravity that can’t be found elsewhere. Not only does this put the “low” in low-impact (your joints will thank you!), but it creates an unrivaled sense of freedom and buoyancy that’s wonderful for relaxation and stress relief.

Plus, it’s a way to get in some heart-pumping cardio without all the sweat…and that’s not even scratching the surface of all the health benefits. At Haven on the Lake, we’re excited for you to experience all of the perks this fun, full-body workout has to offer at “Take Us Out for a Spin,” our free Aqua Spin Open House, taking place on Sunday, October 18, 2020.

This event is open to the public and will be offered in Haven’s warm water therapy pool, free of charge. To reserve a spot, register online at http://ColumbiaAssociation.org/login or call 410-715-3020. Here’s our line-up of instructors and class times:

  • Kristy Myers: 8:45-9:30am
  • Christine Nwosu: 11:45-12:30pm
  • Peggy Hoffman: 1-1:45pm
  • Jill Calhoun: 2-2:45pm

A Fun, Joint-Friendly Workout

If you’re used to land spinning, you may be surprised to find just how much more you can do with less effort in aqua spin. While the resistance of the water provides a cardio-blasting challenge, your muscles are relaxed and tension-free. This in turn enhances your flexibility and ability to move in entirely new ways.

“There’s so many creative moves you can try on the bike, so you’ll never be bored,” says Haven on the Lake instructor Christine Nwosu. “And don’t expect to be in your seat all class! Your seat may become your handlebars, and we find unique ways to add in our pushups and sit-ups, all working with the constant resistance of the water for an amazing workout.”

The health benefits include full-body muscle toning, better posture, increased range of motion and flexibility, faster recovery from post-workout soreness, enhanced circulation and a boost to your cardiovascular system. The Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation also found that water-based exercise improves body fat percentage, increases physical strength and decreases blood lipids (fatty substances found in the blood).

Come Join Us For Our Open House!

Aqua spin offers everything you love about a traditional spin class, but in an environment that’s ultra-therapeutic and comfortable. As an added perk, Haven is the only place in Columbia to use Hydrorider aqua bikes with flywheel-four adjustable paddle wheels that allow you to control your own resistance. This means your ride can be as intense or lax as you’d like it to be.

Plus, thanks to its low-impact nature and the ability to add modifications, it’s a wonderful choice for those who are working with injuries or conditions that make high-impact exercise difficult, such as arthritis, chronic pain or fibromyalgia.

Looking for aqua swim in Columbia? We’d love for you to join us this Sunday, October 18! Make sure to bring a swimsuit and water shoes. As a friendly reminder, masks must be worn when you’re not in the pool and can be removed right before class begins. Social distancing will also be maintained during this event.

Per the Governor's mandate, masks must be worn at all times in all indoor CA facilities. Masks must also be worn outdoors whenever it is not possible to maintain social distancing. The exception is that masks are not required while swimming and are optional but highly recommended in high-intensity cardio activities. For details and a list of exceptions, please see our Facility Guidelines and FAQs.

Thank you for helping to stop the spread!
