Janet’s fitness career began over 20 years ago after a career in marketing and sales. She began teaching group fitness classes such as low-impact aerobics and step in clubs around the D.C. area, including Spa Lady, YMCA and Sport and Health.
As the fitness industry evolved, so did Janet’s fitness career. Joining Columbia Association’s group fitness team in 1996, she added personal training, When If Not Now (WINN) coaching and managerial duties to her plate (WINN is a modified personal training program for those new to exercise, whether beginning or beginning again, as well as seniors or persons with conditions or injuries.) Janet’s interests have expanded to include Mat and Aqua Pilates. She has taught free weight training, pre/post natal exercise, senior fitness and group fitness classes for all levels of exercisers. Janet holds a bachelor’s degree from American University.
Janet’s certifications include Personal Trainer (ACE), Group Fitness Instructor (AFAA), Spinning Certified Instructor, Les Mills certified instructor (BodyPumpⓇ, BodyViveⓇ), Peak Pilates and Basic Mat.
What is your favorite form of mind body movement or lesson you teach, and why?
Pilates is my favorite class to teach and to participate in. It transcends all modes of exercise and is applicable to everyone in their everyday lives. Developing core strength and balance makes everything from running a marathon to BodyPump more effective and meaningful
What is your favorite song or type of music you listen to when teaching?
I love the oldies that all participants can sing to!
What inspires you?
Members and exercise participants who have changed their lives simply by taking on one new type of exercise inspires me. I am also inspired when I feel like I have made a difference in someone’s life by teaching an inspiring and enjoyable class.
What is a quote or mantra that you live by?
“Learn something new every day; never stop growing.”
What is your haven?
My haven is the beach. Cool winds, hot sun and listening to the waves wash over the shore — it’s both beautiful and peaceful.
