A drama major from the University of Zaragoza (Spain), Menchu also studied jazz dance. Once in the United States, she worked out to stay fit while performing in musicals in Washington, D.C. Menchu eventually became a member of the Aurora Dance Company at Howard Community College (where she also worked as a choreographer) and the Dance Company at Montgomery College. From there, she joined forces with Columbia Association and became an aqua instructor.
Menchu developed her own Latin aerobic class called Rhythm and Flow, which incorporates challenging choreographies for the body and the mind. She is a comedian at heart and brings stand-up comedy to all of her classes, making the participants get out of their heads and enjoy the purity of being in the moment.
Menchu holds various certifications in barre, group fitness, aqua, LaBlastⓇ, ZumbaⓇ, Les Mills BodyPumpⓇ and Body ShredⓇ.
What is your favorite form of mind body movement or lesson you teach, and why?
I love relevés, where the dancer rises to the tip of their toes. Relevés are a beautiful way of feeling taller and stretching your body. They help you work on your balance and tone your tummy, lower back and middle section.
What is your favorite song or type of music you listen to when teaching?
One of my favorites songs of all time for cooling down is “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. I come from the theater world, so this song is my way of mashing up my two worlds. It is a song that helps you to leave your body and see yourself from the outside-in.
What inspires you?
Many things inspire me! The strength of people when they try to achieve goals and pull themselves up from a weak spot inspires me. Being able to see and be part of transformations in the mind, body and overall well-being is very fulfilling and inspiring.
What is a quote or mantra that you live by?
“When my muscles say ‘NO,’ I say ‘YES!’ Ha ha ha!” It is from Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was so funny when I read it in a magazine years ago, but I love the principle behind it. You are in control and you can decide your own destiny; even though there are many things we have no control of, there are also many that we do.
What is your haven?
My family. They are my whole universe. Neither my husband nor I have many family around, so we completely rely on each other. I love going home, staying home and just spending time with the beautiful gifts that life has given me.
