Benefit from meditating with sound

By Tracy Dye

Stress of the everyday can crowd your mind with a cacophony of noise. This internal noise can be made up of everything from work deadlines, to family obligations, to traffic jams and everything in between. With so much bustle occupying our days, it can seem near impossible to decompress. How do your find the proverbial “off” switch in your mind?

Meditation is one of the most accessible resources if you want to reduce stress. You can take part in the practice in your own home or enjoy meditation during mind body classes like yoga, tai chi and qigong. Meditation offers a host of potential benefits , including:

  • Stress reduction
  • Reduced chance of brain decline
  • Better cardiovascular health
  • Reduction in pain
  • Reduction in anxiety and depression

The practice can take several forms, including primordial sound meditation. Primordial sounds are the sounds and vibrations you hear throughout nature. Two examples include ocean waves crashing and wind rustling through trees. Sound meditation is also mantra-based, with the most common mantra being an “OM” (pronounced AUM).

According to Mind Body Green, “OM is a matrix of all sounds, when in its diversified form gives rise to all words used in language.” Repeated use of this mantra during sound meditation can foster a sense of peaceful awareness.

You can also choose to create your own personal mantra based on your goals, successes or whatever you feel gives you strength and positivity. Repeat this mantra throughout your meditation practice and during any time you need strength.

Meditating to the sounds of nature can also affect the brain in ways that reduces insomnia and leads to better overall sleep.

Whatever you choose, there’s no doubt that the right types of sound can help eliminate the extraneous noise of the day to day.

Per the Governor's mandate, masks must be worn at all times in Haven on the Lake, including while physically exercising. The exception is that masks are not required while swimming or when it provides a bonafide health risk.

Thank you for doing your part to help stop the spread!
