Why should you meditate? Before we can answer that question, we have to clarify something: What does meditation mean?
Meditation is the practice of allowing the mind to open; it is gaining awareness of the present moment. Though simple, this practice can offer numerous benefits, from stress reduction to greater longevity. The goal of meditation is to free the mind of unwanted thoughts.
To meditate, you quiet the mind by focusing on one point for a sustained period of time. This is the practice of being mindful.
More than 47 scientific studies have shown that meditation can relieve anxiety, depression and pain. Some other benefits include:
- Improved concentration and memory
- Better social/relationship skills
- Increased empathy and compassion
- Increased productivity
You may be wondering where to start. If you are new to meditation, it’s recommended that you take a class or join a meditation group so you can be guided by an experienced teacher.
Outside of class, you can start by simply sitting quietly for five minutes a day, focusing on your breath while you inhale and exhale. Very soon you will experience a sense of peace. Be sure to practice a short time every day to form a positive habit.
